HISTORY
It is possible to trace this building`s history back over 350 years. Originally
farm cottages, a barn and stable it was known as The Ship Hotel as early as
1772, probably so named after the boost in trade from thirsty navvies who cut
the Leeds & Liverpool canal – the Skipton section of the canal was opened in
1773.
In April 1814 during celebrations of Napoleon`s downfall “the band struck up God
Save The King” at 8 p.m from the door of the Ship tavern (another slice of pizza
if you can name the monarch??)
1860 the Castle Estate sold the freehold to Scott & Robinson the Skipton
brewers.
In 1888 Ship Corner was widened from 23 feet at its narrowest point to 42 feet
due to the increasing number of horse-drawn accidents (this was a busy location
due to the cattle market being on the High Street / Sheep Street setts). As part
of the road widening the old hotel was demolished and replaced by the new Ship
Hotel building. This was much larger (3 storeys opposed to 2) and was the
district headquarters for Cook`s tours.
The Ship Hotel closed on June 30th 1924 and the Co-Operative Insurance took it
over.
We have called it the “Old” Ship Hotel to distinguish it from the New Ship
public house which is now David Hill`s estate agents at Mill Bridge.
Historical Features To Look Out For
1. The impressive and grand staircase, with stained-glass windows showing
Skipton`s coat-of-arms, a fine 3-masted sailing ship and the Craven Heifer.
2. The dumb-waiter wheel at first floor landing level
3. Original ceiling roses apartment 3
4. Original covings, window seats and sash windows throughout
5. The lettering above the old stable yard arch originally read “stabling” but
has since been painted over with “garaging” – both words can still be made out
along with hand painted signs to the side of the gates.
Parking : there are 2 parking spaces available by separate negotiation in the
town centre. Otherwise parking can be on the High Street setts (from 6 p.m until
8 a.m every day) or in the public car parks (permits are approx £150 per annum
for 23 hours per day).
